“Slice Of Life” anime is defined mainly as stories and situations which are not normal in their initial appearance but plausible in real life. Some people have trouble understanding what this means and we can’t really offer up an explanation because that’s not why you’re here. In this article, we’ll go over the Top 10 Slice of Life Anime you can watch on Funimation

Nevertheless, we’re going to be going over (in our opinion) the top 10 anime from the “Slice Of Life” genre that are available on Funimation to stream. Once again this is just our opinion and nothing more, if you enjoy reading this and find it useful, please give it a like or share it. We have included in this list series that are dubbed as well as subbed ones as well.

10. D-Frag (Sub)

Kicking off at number 10 in this Top slice of life anime is D-Frag. I’m going to be honest with you here, D-Frag was not for me, I didn’t understand what was going on while watching it and the story just made no sense to me at all. But from what I have learned, it’s about Kazama Kenji, who for some reason “thinks he is a delinquent” until he “and his gang” come across a group of girls that are more “outrageous” than he is. He is, and I quote “Shanghaied into joining their club, what will happen to his everyday life from that point on?”.

It really wasn’t anything special and that’s why it’s at the bottom of this list. It’s pretty colourful and fun to watch but there is nothing in the sense of character development, relationships between characters or an overall good and engaging narrative, the ending is also pretty bad too. I’d only give this a go if you’re really bored, like I was unfortunately.

9. Gamers (Dub)

At number 9 on our Top slice of life anime list is Gamers, I found Gamers to be pretty boring and cringe at first but once I got into it, the story became quite funny and relatable. The story follows Keita Amano who is obsessed with video games, preferring the company of games over people. This all changes however when he runs into Karen Tendou who also loves video games. She invites Amano to join (what I believe to be) the school gaming club. He meets some new friends and some relationships are forged as a result of this. The story is kind of complicated and it wasn’t very memorable. Granted, it was one of the earlier animes I watched but there was nothing too significant about it to me. You should give it a go if you’re into that kind of Kawaii-type anime because that sort of thing is abundant in Gamers.

8. Convenience Store Boyfriends (Dub)

Coming in at number 8 for this Top slice of life anime list is Convenience Store Boyfriends, which struck me as pretty boring the fist time I started watching it. I have to say it will take you a long time to get into it, that’s why it’s near the top of this list. The characters all kind of look and sound the same the story is pretty dull and unoriginal and it wasn’t anything special for me. Once you get into it though the story progresses. It’s about 6 high school boys who hang out at a convenience store they meet some girls there who are also in their year and this is how they meet. Over the course of the series, the friends meet up and get to know each other, forming both sexual and friendship-type relationships. It is kind of boring at first but it can get good once you get into it.

7. HenSuki (Are You Willing To Fall In Love With A Pervert As Long As She’s A Cutie (Dub)

At number 7 for this Top slice of life anime, we have HenSuki. I know that some of you would consider HenSuki as a romance or Harem anime but I would have to disagree. There’s not a lot in the way of actual romance if you ask me in this series although there is a lot of Harem-type scenes and that’s why it will probably be on our Harem anime list as well. Anyway, HenSuki is about a boy named Kekei or Cakey as it’s pronounced who one day finds some girl’s underwear in his locker with a love letter.

The letter doesn’t say who it’s written by and the whole series is basically Kekei trying to figure out who “undiella” (the girl who placed the underwear in his locker) is. There are lots of suspects all of whom have weird fetiches such as a love for the scent of boys’ body odour, being a masochist pervert obsessed with dogs or having an interest in having Kekei as their slave. Granted the ending did catch me off guard and I didn’t see it coming. I’d give this a go as it was pretty funny and there is a lot of Harem and fan service action.

6. Ben-To (Dub)

Kicking off for number 6 on this Top slice of life anime list is Ben-To. The story of Ben-To is quite an interesting and original one and this is what drew me into watching it in the first place. Ben-To is about a small supermarket store which on certain occasions puts Bento on sale for half the price of what it is. Everyone who wants to acquire it for this price must fight each other to get it. Our main character learns this the hard way when he tries to go for it getting involved in the fight that ensues after he goes for the product.

The plot is that if you are willing to pick up that half-price meat then you must be prepared to right off whoever wants it after. It’s a pretty simple story to understand and I can see why people watch it. As far as we know there is only one season with 12 episodes, however there may be extras.

5. Hyouka (Dub)

At number 5 for this list of Top slice of life anime is Hyouka, which has a very similar to tone to Kimi ni Todoke in the way it’s presented and this drew me into it from the start. It’s about a school club called the “Classic Literature Club”. The whole series is basically the club members solving “mysteries” and going on little adventures.

The main character is very intelligent but it is reluctant do anything about it. However, his classmate, Eru Chitanda does her best to persuade him to go with them and solve every mystery they come into. The group of four basically go around solving little mysteries and helping people out, they also discover the cause of their clubs creation. It’s a sweet kind of anime and it has 22 episodes. It’s not one I was heavily into but it was still nice to watch on the side.

4. How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift? (Dub)

©Doga Kobo (How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift)

For number 4 on this Top slice-of life anime is How heavy are the dumbbells you lift? I found this anime pretty fun to watch and the story is not to hard to follow too. The story follows 17-year-old Hibiki Sakura who, after seeing that she has gained weight over the holidays, wants to join the new local gym that has just sprung up. However, when she enters she finds that there are lots of half-naked bodybuilders working out. Even though this isn’t to her liking, she accepts as her friend persuades her and she also finds her instructor attractive.

The rest of the story is the instructor teaching the group how to do certain workouts and how these workouts are effective etc. It does sound pretty boring just off of this description but honestly, I found the story pretty hilarious and fun to watch, even Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a brief appearance. I’d give it a go and if you have already you can read our article regarding season 2.

3. Classroom Of The Elite (Dub)

© Studio Lerche (Classroom Of The Elite)

Coming in at 3rd place for this Top slice of life anime list is Classroom Of The Elite which is one of the more memorable series I watched over this year, and I really would recommend it to anyone. The story sucks you in and although I didn’t like most of the characters, I was still edging on my seat while watching it.

The story is about a school in Japan which has been heavily funded by state entities in order to test and train students so that they can produce the best effective and productive members of society or in other words, Japan’s elites.

They’re split into 4 different classes A, B, C and D (D being the lowest). Each class gains points in order to improve their position as a class. If a class reaches enough points they will overtake the class ahead of them and become that class. Also, points can be used to buy anything the students wish. The main character is also a sociopath, who is only interested in climbing to the top and using everyone. If you have already watched it we recommend you read our blog regarding Classroom Of The Elite and the potential for a season 2.

2. Kaguya Sama (Love Is War) (Sub)

© A-1 Pictures (Kaguya Sama (Love Is War)

At number 2 on this Top 10 slice-of-life anime list, we have Kaguya Sama! Or Love Is War if you prefer. You may be surprised to see this on this list as you would think that Kaguya Sama would be romantic, but just hear me out. There is a lot of beating around the bush action with Kaguya Sama and that is basically the whole premise of the series.

The story is about 2 high school students, Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane who are both in love with each other. However, they don’t want to admit it to each other and neither of them is willing to confess their love to the other. Both of them know that the other is in love with them and the series focuses on the tricks and ploys that both of them use in order to try and make the other one confess to them.

This is so they can be the one who is asked out first. It’s a pretty stupid and unrealistic (yet still plausible) story which focuses on other characters as well. Love Is War also has lots of different sub-sub narratives which branch out into little stories which make it more like the Slice Of Life genre. It has quite an uplifting sort of aura to it and it’s pretty funny and entertaining to watch. It has two seasons currently and they are both on Funimation.

1. Kono Oto Tomare! (Sounds Of Life) (Dub)

© Platinum Vision (Kono Oto Tomare!)

Finally at number one for this Top slice of life anime list, we have Kono Oto Tomare! Or Sounds Of Life if you prefer. I just want to say that, in my opinion, Kono Oto Tomare! is the best representation of the Slice Of Life anime genre out there and if you’re into Slice Of Life anime and haven’t given Kono Oto Tomare a go, I’d seriously recommend this.

Anyway, Kono Oto Tomare has a pretty good and straightforward story in my opinion. It follows the story of the Koto club at Tokize High School, which is about to go under due to a lack of members until Kurata (the club’s president) is surprised to find that Kudo, a boy whom everyone views as a troublemaker is deciding to join the club.

The club is also joined by Hozuki, who is a professional Koto player at a much higher level than both Kudo and Kurata. However, she promises to take them to nationals. The rest of the story is about the club trying to qualify for nationals with the help of some other club members joining as well. Some other sub characters join but we don’t have time to mention them now.

I think Kono Oto Tomare brilliantly capture the Slice Of Life genre perfectly and it is a staple for what every series that fits into that genre should be. If you haven’t watched Kono Oto Tomare then we really suggest you do. On the other hand, if you have already, we recommend you read our article on the potential for a season 3.
